06/11/2015 11:14

San Javier celebrates every third Sunday in October

The Fiesta of La Taspana is a tradition of the community of San Javier in the San Ignacio municipality that dates back to 1862 or 1865. It began as a commitment of common good among the pueblo's old inhabitants. Today it is San Javier's biggest festival. It lasts for three days and climaxes on the third Sunday of October.
They say that the Bolado family and a Mr. Vincente Zazueta reached an agreement to clean up the weeds and undergrowth that grows in the streets during the rainy season. To make the work more pleasant, they used to have a regional band accompany them. The tradition has been passed down from parents to their children for generations.
Everyone goes to San Javier. They do the clean up or the "taspana", animated by the band's music. If you do not participate, you are "fined" by being charged money or obliged to have some food or tequila so that you get with the program and join in. At the end, they select the best "taspanador".
This year the Sinaloa Arts Fair is coming to this remote part of the state. There will be dance, music and theater before the actual Fiesta of Taspana and you cannot miss it.
